Heather Unbehaun, who has been accused of abducting her daughter from a suburb in Illinois six years ago, has turned herself in, bringing an end to a widely publicized case. She is currently being held without bail at the Kane County Adult Justice Center in Illinois on charges of abduction.
Just days before her surrender, Kayla Unbehaun was found safe in North Carolina and reunited with her custodial father. Heather Unbehaun had been arrested in North Carolina on a fugitive warrant from Illinois for charges of kidnapping and child abduction. Initially, she was held on a $250,000 bond but was released after posting bail on Tuesday, as stated by Samantha Booth, a spokesperson for the Asheville Police Department.
Kayla had been abducted on July 4, 2017, following a parade in South Elgin, Illinois. Heather had informed Kayla's father, Ryan Iserka, that they were going camping but never returned. A felony warrant was subsequently issued for Heather’s arrest.
The case saw a breakthrough when an individual in Asheville recognized Kayla from the Netflix series “Unsolved Mysteries” and notified the authorities.
Ryan Iserka expressed his gratitude to law enforcement and supporters for reuniting him with his daughter. Heather Unbehaun's next court appearance is set for Wednesday morning at the Kane County Judicial Center.
