Some people dream vividly, while others don't remember dreaming at all.
But do dreams carry any significance? While many believe dreams are messages from unseen forces, some scientists argue that they are merely the result of neuronal processes occurring in the brain.
Our brains remain highly active while we sleep. Dreams can sometimes reflect the events of our day or our underlying fears. But what does it mean when we dream about someone who has passed away?
Such dreams can be part of the grieving process or signify a transition in our own lives. According to Healthline, it often relates to the latter. These dreams are common during significant life changes, like starting a new job, moving to a new place, or meeting new people.
More important than the dream itself is how it makes us feel.

Rubin Naiman, Ph.D., an expert in sleep patterns, suggests that "Dream interpretation involves decoding the dream to expand our psychological awareness and consciousness." Therefore, dreaming of a deceased person might relate to how changes in our lives impact us.
Some contemporary neuroscientists believe that during REM sleep, the brain performs maintenance tasks and might randomly generate visual content, which some consider meaningless. However, Naiman points out that some cultures, like the indigenous people of Australia, view dreaming as an integral part of spiritual existence, suggesting it might hold deeper meaning.
Experts categorize dreams about deceased individuals into four main types:
- Processing Grief: Dreaming of a deceased person may help the brain process the pain of loss.
- Unresolved Feelings: If we had unresolved issues with the deceased, such as guilt or regret, this might manifest in our dreams.
- Self-Reflection: Dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg suggests that seeing a deceased person in our dreams may reflect recognizing their behaviors, like substance abuse, in ourselves.
- Visitations: Some believe these dreams are visits from the deceased, especially if they appear happy or well-dressed, implying they are at peace. If the dream leaves us feeling good, it may signify a positive connection or a greeting from the deceased.
Regardless of our views on dreams, they offer profound and meaningful insights. They often provide a window into our soul and our continued connection with those we have lost.
