A 10-Year-Old Girl with the Body of a One-Year-Old Overcomes Numerous Surgeries Despite Online Ridicule

Bella Thomson, a brave 10-year-old from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, is courageously battling three rare medical conditions: a form of dwarfism, Hirschsprung’s Disease, and Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). Her devoted mother, Kyla Thomson, has spent nearly a decade caring for Bella and has become a passionate advocate, sharing their inspiring journey with over 7 million followers on TikTok.

In a recent interview with the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation (CDHF), Kyla discussed Bella’s challenging medical path. Hirschsprung’s Disease, which affects nerve cells in sections of the large intestine, has profoundly impacted Bella, necessitating comprehensive treatment. Through their robust social media presence, the Thomsons aim to raise awareness and provide support to other families facing similar medical challenges.

Despite their positive message, the Thomsons have encountered negativity. A viral video of Kyla lifting Bella toward the camera triggered a wave of online criticism. This prompted defensive responses from prominent TikTok personalities like Jen Hamilton and Ophelia Nichols. Kyla, usually hesitant to engage with online negativity, found this particular instance particularly burdensome.

“I usually avoid responding because I don’t want to give them the attention they seek,” Kyla explained. “They’re just hiding behind keyboards in the comments section.” She acknowledged that while such incidents are rare, viral content inevitably attracts heightened scrutiny.

Instead of disabling comments, as she had done in the past, Kyla chose to directly address hurtful remarks, aiming to educate others about Bella’s complex medical journey. Bella, who due to her dwarfism weighs less than 30 pounds, has spent over 1,000 days in the hospital, undergone numerous surgeries, and survived multiple septic shock infections. Just last year, she underwent a life-saving bowel transplant.

Nevertheless, the Thomsons remain committed to their genuine supporters.

Kyla is dedicated to advocating for pediatric organ donations and supporting medical families, prioritizing education over disengagement from online platforms. Despite adversity, Bella consistently displays remarkable resilience, often encouraging her mother to ignore negativity.

The Thomsons continue to create content for their supporters, lovingly referred to as the “Bella Bravelings.” Kyla emphasized their community’s importance, saying, “They’re our focus. We show up for them, and we’re grateful for their support.” She hopes their followers will continue promoting positivity without retaliating against trolls.

For Bella, her supportive community serves as a source of motivation to persevere. “That’s what she knows, and it keeps her going too,” Kyla affirmed. The Thomsons’ journey stands as a testament to resilience, advocacy, and the unwavering support of a compassionate online community.
