James, affectionately known as “Ninja Turtle Baby,” was born to Kaitlyn and Tim in August 2021. Their initial joy turned into concern when they discovered a scabby growth on James’ back.
Kaitlyn recalls the early days as terrifying, with doctors baffled by the unusual condition.
Over time, the growth developed into a shape resembling a turtle shell, which inspired James’ unique nickname.

Despite the endearing label, the growth presented significant challenges for James, disrupting his sleep and limiting his mobility. After a period of uncertainty, a pediatric dermatologist in Orlando diagnosed James with a giant congenital melanocytic nevus, a generally benign condition that nonetheless required medical attention.
At six months old, James began treatment to remove the growth, under the care of specialists at the University of Chicago. The objective is to replace the affected skin with healthy tissue, leaving James with just a scar when the process is complete.

Throughout this difficult journey, Kaitlyn and Tim have shown immense strength and resilience. Kaitlyn speaks of the valuable lessons she has learned about motherhood and perseverance. As they approach the conclusion of this challenging path, they remain hopeful for a positive outcome.
