We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Michel de Grece, the uncle of King Charles, who died at the age of 85. His death on July 28 at an Athens hospital marks the end of an era in European royalty.
Michel de Grece, also known as Prince Michael, was a distinguished historian and author. As the last surviving grandson of King George I of Greece and a first cousin of the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, he was a beloved uncle to King Charles III.
In 1965, Michel renounced his royal titles to marry artist Marina Karella, with whom he had two daughters and five grandchildren. Despite Greece's political turmoil, he chose to remain in the country. His scholarly work, focusing on Greek history, the Ottoman Empire, and European royalty, has left a significant impact. His personal anecdotes and insights shared on Instagram further enrich his legacy.
Michel’s compassion for his family and dedication to his historical pursuits will be remembered as a testament to his influential life. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
