Back in 2012, Aimee Copeland was a 24-year-old graduate student at the University of Georgia. As she approached graduation, she decided to spend some time with friends, enjoying the last few weeks of freedom.
One day, they took a trip to a small lake, where they had the opportunity to zipline over the water. Excited by the adventure, Aimee eagerly gave it a try. However, what was meant to be a fun outing turned into a life-changing moment.

Over time, Aimee adapted to her new reality. Four years after the accident, a photo of her on the beach in a bikini went viral, inspiring thousands online. In the image, Aimee proudly shows her body—scars, amputations, and all.

Reflecting on her journey, Aimee shared: “It has taken me a long time to become comfortable with and accept my new body. We are ALL made with imperfections and there is so much beauty in our flaws. The scars and skin grafting build character! It’s not about what you have — what you do with what you have is what really counts.”
Today, in 2023, Aimee Copeland is a powerful advocate for amputee and disability rights, sharing her story through public speaking and social media.
In addition to her advocacy, she is also pursuing a PhD in psychology at the University of West Georgia.
