The Window Cleaner’s Efforts to Bring a Smile

Chris, the window cleaner, was on the 18th floor of a residential building when he noticed a tiny figure moving inside one of the units. Curious, he looked closer and saw a small boy, not yet a year old, crawling towards the window.

The child stopped just a few centimeters from the glass, looking a bit sad. Chris, determined to make him smile, pulled funny faces and played a little game of peekaboo, hoping to cheer him up like he often did with his own kids.

But despite his best efforts, the child remained somber, his expression unchanged. Chris couldn’t figure out why the child wasn’t smiling. Soon, he would learn the reason.

An Unexpected Visitor

Perplexed, Chris watched the child, who seemed on the verge of tears. He was about to try another tactic to make the boy laugh when something else caught his eye—a large black cat entered the room, put its paws on the glass, and meowed loudly. Chris, a cat lover himself, was thrilled by the feline's appearance. However, he quickly realized his presence was unsettling for both the child and the cat. He decided to finish cleaning the window and move on.

Just as he prepared to descend, he noticed the little boy doing something strange—the child was pointing at something. Initially, Chris thought the boy was pointing at him, but something felt off. Was there something happening behind him?

Chris’s safety harness and equipment made it difficult for him to turn around, but he managed to untangle himself enough to look. What he saw left him stunned.

A cat was precariously perched on the edge of the terrace, with no way to escape. Chris realized that this must have been what caught the boy's attention. The thought of a child witnessing a cat fall was terrifying—such a memory would be haunting for anyone, especially a young child.

There was only one thing to do.

Chris quickly lowered himself with his safety harness, then sprinted across the street to the building where the cat was trapped. He dashed up the stairs to the top floor, panting, until he reached the roof. From there, he carefully lowered himself on a rope, just like he would for his window-cleaning job. The closer he got to the cat, the louder it meowed in fear.

After ten tense minutes, Chris finally reached the cat. But as he tried to grab it, the frightened animal clung tightly to his arms, clearly terrified. Chris, who had experience with cats, knew how to calm it down. He spoke softly and stroked its ears, slowly winning its trust.

When he finally made it to the ground, a woman rushed over, tears streaming down her face.

The Owner’s Relief

"Kitty! Oh, Katie, are you okay?" the woman cried, scooping her cat into her arms. She explained that she had accidentally locked herself out, leaving the window open, and her kitten had been alone and terrified. Chris reassured her and handed her the cat, which immediately began to purr in relief.

The day had turned out to be far more eventful than Chris had expected. However, one question still lingered in his mind.

The Mystery of the Little Boy

In his ten years as a window cleaner, Chris had never experienced anything quite like this. He couldn’t help but wonder: did the little boy know he was pointing at a cat in danger, or was it just a coincidence? Most importantly, did the child understand that his actions had saved the cat’s life?

Chris never got an answer to these questions. When he returned three months later to clean the same window, the apartment was empty—the tenants, along with the little hero, had moved out.
