Just days before her passing, a brave young girl walked down the aisle with her father to marry her high school sweetheart

Ask any parent, and they’ll likely tell you they would do anything for their child. Becoming a parent transforms your life in the most profound ways, and from the moment your child is born, you dedicate yourself to loving, protecting, and caring for them. Yet, despite this unwavering devotion, there are some things no parent can control. Each year, too many children face illnesses and challenges beyond anyone’s ability to prevent, and the realities of life include accidents and diseases, alongside moments of joy and celebration.

For Alina and Aaron Edwards, their world was shattered when they learned their nine-year-old daughter, Emma, had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Despite their hopes and the best efforts of her doctors, a few months later they were told that there was nothing more that could be done to save her life. Faced with unimaginable heartbreak, they resolved to make the most of the time they had left with their daughter, vowing to fulfill as many of her wishes as they could.

Like many children, Emma might have wished to meet a famous celebrity, visit Disneyland, or watch her favorite team play. But Emma had a different dream—she wanted to marry her best friend, DJ, her 10-year-old boyfriend.

The community quickly rallied around Emma’s dream, and “Emma’s Army,” a group of volunteers, came together to help make it a reality. With support from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, they set out to create a beautiful wedding day for her and DJ. “Most kids want to go to Disneyland,” her mother, Alina, explained, “but Emma wanted to get married, be a wife, and have three kids.”

Emma and DJ’s desire to marry wasn’t new. The two had previously tried to get married at school when they were just eight years old, even selecting groomsmen and bridesmaids from their classmates. However, their teacher, while amused, didn’t allow it. But this time, with the backing of their parents and community, the young couple would have their day.

In just two days, Emma’s wedding was planned and everything was donated by kind-hearted people who wanted to give her the day of her dreams. On June 29, the big day arrived. Emma, dressed in a lovely purple gown, was wheeled down the aisle by her father, beaming with joy as she prepared to marry DJ. The ceremony included heartfelt vows, the exchange of rings, and a kiss to seal their union.

Afterward, Emma returned to her bed to rest, but it was clear to everyone just how much the day had meant to her. Sadly, after bravely fighting her illness for sixteen months, Emma passed away a few weeks later, on July 11, 2023.

Her obituary read: “On July 11, 2023, Emma Brooks Edwards passed away, embraced by her closest loved ones as she entered paradise in the tender arms of her great-grandma Frannie Annie. Emma, ten years old, fought leukemia, which she called 'The imposter,' with incredible courage."

Born on April 22, 2013, Emma was the youngest of the Edwards family, adored by her parents and three older siblings. She loved crafts, telling jokes, her family, Jesus, and, of course, her new “husband,” DJ. Emma was a light to everyone who knew her, inspiring all with her humor, strength, and boundless love. She was a devoted friend, cousin, sister, granddaughter, and “wife,” who left behind a legacy of kindness and joy.

Rest in peace, Emma. You were a beautiful soul taken far too soon.
