Body-shaming is a painful reality that can erode a person’s self-esteem. Society often sets rigid standards for beauty, and many people lose themselves trying to meet these expectations. However, true freedom comes when we accept ourselves, imperfections and all.
Actress Valerie Bertinelli seems to have reached this understanding and is now helping others do the same. In a recent video, the Hot in Cleveland star is seen laughing as a swishing sound plays in the background.
Laughing, Bertinelli explained, "I had a small, hidden bruise activated today." She added, “My jeans are rubbing together, making that sound—you can probably hear it.”
She went on to share that she hadn’t worn those jeans in a while due to a hurtful comment from her ex, who criticized her for the noise they made. Her ex remarked that if she were more active and less lazy, the jeans wouldn’t make that sound when she walked.
Valerie then clarified what she meant by the "hidden bruise." She explained, "Hidden bruises are the emotional, verbal, and mental abuse that others can’t see."
But now, she said, she could laugh about it because the healing process was working. She had stored the jeans away for a long time, but now, wearing them and hearing that sound symbolizes her freedom.
She admitted she hesitated before posting the video, fearing people would tell her to “move on” and “let it go,” but she realized that speaking out about her experience of body-shaming was part of her healing journey.
The response to the video was overwhelmingly supportive. One commenter wrote, “Thank you for sharing the concept of hidden bruises,” while another added, “I’m so happy for you! You and your strength inspire so many people.”
