Gujarat family holds funeral for their ‘lucky car’; spends Rs 4 lakh for ceremony attended by 1,500 people

In a remarkable and emotional farewell in Gujarat’s Amreli district, a family captured public attention by holding a funeral for their cherished "lucky car"—a 12-year-old Wagon R. To honor its significance, the family spent Rs4 lakh on the ceremony, which drew around 1,500 attendees.

The unique tribute involved placing the decorated vehicle, adorned with marigold garlands and rose petals, into a 15-foot deep pit on the family’s farm. Spectators recorded the memorable sight as the car was lowered into its final resting place.

Sanjay Polara, the car’s owner, shared with The Times of India the deep connection his family felt to the vehicle, which he said had brought prosperity and respect over the years. “I bought this car nearly 12 years ago, and it brought prosperity to the family. We saw success in business, and our family’s standing in society improved. The car proved lucky for us, so instead of selling it, I decided to give it a ‘samadhi’ (burial) as a tribute,” he explained.

Polara also plans to plant a tree at the site, symbolizing the car’s lasting impact and serving as a reminder for future generations. The tree will mark where the family's “lucky car” rests.

In preparation for the ceremony, Polara sent four-page invitations to around 2,000 people, sharing the car's importance. The invitation stated, “This car has been like a family member since 2006, bringing good fortune. We want to remember it forever, so we have planned this burial.”

After a video of the event was posted on Instagram by @jist.news, it quickly went viral.

Social media users shared their reactions, with one joking, “Archeological survey will be excavating a Wagon R in the year 3024,” while another wrote, “People in the future are gonna trip on this.” One user quipped, “This happens only in India.”
