Young girl with swollen abdomen due to deadly disease saved by dad's life-saving kidney donation

Every parent’s greatest hope is for their children to grow up healthy and happy. For Karen Rodas and Paul Bybkin, that dream was initially overshadowed by heartache.

Their first child, Nathaniel, was born with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a condition that causes cysts to develop in the kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. Tragically, Nathaniel passed away just 36 hours after birth.

In 2013, the couple welcomed a daughter, Maddy, into the world. However, their joy was tempered by devastating news: Maddy had inherited the same life-threatening condition as her brother. The disease caused her abdomen to swell to the size of a woman nine months pregnant, and her health rapidly declined.

Maddy spent much of her early life in and out of hospitals, sleeping up to 18 hours a day. Doctors warned that her survival depended on finding a kidney donor.

In a stroke of fortune, her father Paul was a perfect match. Despite the risks, he didn’t hesitate to step forward.

“With Paul and Maddy, two of my most precious souls, going under the knife, my nerves were a wreck,” Karen told The Mirror.

The surgery was a success. Both Paul and Maddy recovered well, and the transformation in their daughter’s health was remarkable.

“Daddy’s kidney has saved our little girl,” Karen said. “Now, she has boundless energy. Her massive tummy has reduced to just a little rounded, and she is a happy and healthy two-year-old.”

Paul sees his selfless act as simply part of being a parent.

“We’ve been on a rollercoaster,” he explained, “but any father would have done what I did. Now, we’re on a high, watching Maddy grow into a happy, healthy little girl.”

While Maddy may require another transplant in 25 years, for now, she has a bright future filled with joy and love.
