Dog Rescued From Euthanasia Can’t Contain His Joy

I recently came across a quote that said rescuing dogs is “50% sadness and 50% relief,” and honestly, it couldn’t be more accurate.

When someone encounters an abandoned or stray dog for the first time, it’s heartbreaking to realize how many animals are suffering and how desperately you want to help them all.
The other half of the experience is pure relief — seeing a rescued dog finally safe, cared for, and on the path to a happier life with a loving family.

In this story, we meet one such pup who was saved just in time, given a second chance, and shown what kindness truly looks like.

These days, it’s sadly common for overwhelmed owners to surrender their pets to be euthanized, especially when medical bills become too expensive.

That was nearly the fate of Gregory, a sweet Beagle who came within days of being put down — until a man named Joe Kirk stepped in.

Joe rescued Gregory just two days before his scheduled euthanasia. It couldn’t have been a more perfect outcome, as Joe and his wife, Schenley, run Hound Rescue and Animal Sanctuary, a nonprofit in Findlay, Ohio. Their organization is dedicated to helping neglected animals find loving homes and offering foster care to seniors and dogs considered unadoptable.

In a Facebook post, Schenley shared, “Gregory is one thankful and appreciative Beagle! He KNOWS he is SAFE! He is heartworm positive and will be going through treatment, but he knows he is in good hands. We will get him healthy and give him all the love he deserves and a wonderful future!”

Once he was safely in the Kirks’ care, Gregory was taken to a veterinarian and started treatment for his heartworm disease.

Not long after he recovered, he was placed on the adoption list — and he didn’t have to wait long for a family to choose him. Soon enough, Gregory was welcomed into his forever home, where he now enjoys life with his new family and a fellow Beagle sibling.

Reflecting on their work, Schenley shared a touching message:
“We are often asked how many dogs we have saved. The answer that always comes to mind is, we have saved one more. One more dog is safe and will have all the love and respect they deserve. One more dog will be properly fed and receive needed veterinary care. One more dog will have a loving forever home. There is no better feeling and nothing more fulfilling.”

If this story shows us anything, it’s that a little kindness can completely transform a dog’s life — and that there is always room to do more for animals who need our help.
