Meghan Markle has officially adopted a new last name, drawing fresh attention and debate.
In her latest Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, she revealed that she, Prince Harry, and their children, Archie and Lilibet, are now using a shared family name. The decision has sparked conversation, as royal titles are traditionally not used as surnames outside formal or official contexts.
Meghan explained that the choice carries deep personal meaning, representing family unity and the story she and Harry have built together.
Critics argue that royal protocol would favor the surname “Mountbatten-Windsor,” which is traditionally used by descendants of Queen Elizabeth II. Supporters, however, point out that Prince Harry previously used “Wales” as a surname during his military service, making the choice less unusual than it may seem.
The change has also drawn a response from Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, who has reportedly expressed disappointment, viewing the decision as another sign of distance from her birth family.
Royal commentators note that while Meghan may use “Sussex” informally or personally, she will likely continue to be referred to as “Meghan Markle” in public and media discussions.
