Larisa, 66, finally sought help when the pain became impossible to ignore. At first, she dismissed it as something harmless—maybe indigestion, stress, or simply the effects of aging. She even joked that she had eaten too much bread, blaming it for the swelling in her stomach. But the results from her initial tests told a very different story.
“Ma’am…” the doctor said, reviewing the report again. “This may sound unusual, but the tests suggest a pregnancy.”
Larisa was stunned. “I’m sixty-six!”
“Rare cases do happen,” he replied. “But you should see a gynecologist as soon as possible.”
Although shocked, a part of her began to believe it. As a mother of three, she felt confident she understood her body. When her belly continued to grow, she convinced herself it was a late-in-life miracle. The heaviness she felt—and even sensations she interpreted as movement—only strengthened that belief.
She delayed seeing a specialist. “I’ve been through this before,” she told herself. “When the time comes, I’ll go.”
Month after month, her stomach grew larger. Neighbors were surprised, but Larisa simply smiled and called it a blessing. She began preparing—knitting baby clothes, choosing names, even buying a small crib.
Finally, when what she believed was the ninth month arrived, she made an appointment with a gynecologist to prepare for delivery. The doctor grew concerned the moment he saw her age on the chart. But as the examination began and the scan appeared on the screen, his expression changed immediately.
He stepped back, his voice serious.
“Ma’am… you are not pregnant.”
Larisa was confused. “What do you mean? The tests, my stomach… the movements?”
“The earlier result was a false positive,” the doctor explained gently. “What you have is not a pregnancy—it’s a large tumor.”
She went silent.
“An ovarian tumor,” he continued. “It has grown to the size of a full-term pregnancy. That’s what caused the swelling and the sensations you felt. Unfortunately, it has already spread. This is a critical condition. You need urgent treatment.”
The room seemed to spin. In that moment, everything she had believed shattered. The excitement, the preparations, the hope—replaced by a harsh reality she never expected.
The doctor spoke softly but honestly: “If you had come earlier, we might have treated this much sooner. Time is very important in cases like this.”
Overwhelmed, Larisa broke down in tears. She realized how a misunderstanding—and delaying proper medical care—had cost her precious time.
Now, instead of preparing to welcome a new life, she faced a different battle: fighting for her own.
