Missing 9-Year-Old Girl From Unsolved Mysteries Case Has Been Located Alive

Heather Unbehaun, accused of abducting her daughter from a suburb in Illinois six years ago, has turned herself in, bringing an end to a case that drew national attention. She is currently being held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center on child abduction charges, with bail denied.

Her daughter, Kayla Unbehaun, was located safe and unharmed in North Carolina and has since been reunited with her father. Shortly afterward, Heather surrendered to authorities.

Police in North Carolina initially arrested Heather based on an Illinois warrant tied to kidnapping and child abduction charges. She was first held on a $250,000 bond but was later released after posting bail, according to Asheville Police Department spokesperson Samantha Booth.

The case dates back to July 4, 2017, when Heather told Kayla’s father, Ryan Iserka, that she was taking their daughter on a camping trip following a parade in South Elgin, Illinois. When they failed to return, authorities issued a felony warrant for her arrest.

A major break came when someone in Asheville recognized Kayla from the Netflix series “Unsolved Mysteries” and alerted law enforcement, leading to her recovery.

Ryan Iserka thanked law enforcement and the public for their support in helping reunite him with his daughter. Heather Unbehaun is expected to appear in court again on Wednesday morning at the Kane County Judicial Center.
