Deadly Crash on Trans-Canada Highway Claims 15 Lives Near Carberry, Manitoba
A tragic collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near Carberry, Manitoba, has left at least 15 people dead and 10 others seriously injured. The accident, which occurred west of Winnipeg on Thursday, involved a passenger bus carrying elderly residents from Dauphin en route to Sand Hills Casino and a semi-truck.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that the injured, including both drivers, were transported to hospital for emergency care. The crash is among the deadliest highway incidents in Manitoba’s recent history.
Eyewitness John Proven described a harrowing scene, recalling a burning vehicle and a heavily damaged transport truck at the site. Emergency crews responded swiftly, deploying an air ambulance and 12 ground ambulances to aid victims.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. Preliminary surveillance footage suggests the truck may have had the right of way, but RCMP Superintendent Rob Lasson stressed that the investigation remains in its early stages and no final conclusions have been made.
The incident has drawn comparisons to the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy in Saskatchewan, which claimed 16 lives. Investigators are consulting with experts involved in that case to help guide their response.
William Doherty, CEO of Day & Ross—the trucking company involved—issued a public statement expressing condolences and pledging full cooperation. “The thoughts of the entire Day & Ross team are with those who have lost loved ones in this terrible incident,” he said. “We are holding out hope that those injured will recover.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also addressed the tragedy, saying, “The news from Carberry, Manitoba is incredibly tragic. I’m sending my deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones today, and I’m keeping the injured in my thoughts. I cannot imagine the pain those affected are feeling – but Canadians are here for you.”
The crash has left the small community of Dauphin in mourning. Many of the victims were local residents. Dauphin Mayor David Bosiak described the collective grief: “Literally everyone in town knew someone that was on that bus. There’s a collective feeling of shock … it’s just a tremendous tragedy for our little community.”
